the best way to run windows apps on linux
unfortunately, after installing linux you would still have to use some apps that only run on windows. and this due to :
- greed and money doesn’t allow them to make a version for linux (microsoft office)
- the linux version is hot piece of shit (davinci resolve/ MATLAB)
- there’s no other alternative (how the fuck in the year 2025 and there’s no other thing that does what proteus do ?)
- other alternatives are dog water (libre fucken office )
- the linux version is messed up due to wayland shenanigans (arduino ide/ obsidian/discord/ …)
so, you can use these apps either by switching back to windows (you would’ve to kill me for that to happen) or by using any emulator (wine, playonlinux, bottles, winapps,…) which is fine but it didn’t work for me, this only works for youtubers and reddit/discord mods.
the last solution is to make a windows vm runnning on linux and make a shared folder between them.
the windows vm
before making a windows vm, you first have to get a good windows iso that is suited for your use. you can get the windows 11 iso that has the latest and greatest security updates and all the crap microsoft wants you to use, or you can get a windows 10 iso that is slightly outdated but still full of crap that you eventually would have to remove to get a good performance, or you can do as i do and get a de-bloated iso of windows 10 that only has file explorer and edge (against your will) that only consumes 1G of ram at startup. the choice is yours but i recommend that last option for obvious reason. link
the best way to make a vm on linux is by using kvm. it is fast, reliable, easy to use, powerful if you know what you’r doing. here’s the best tutorial : link
shared folder
after setting up the windows vm, you have to make a shared folder. here’s the best tutorial : link
i faced a problem here which that you have to download the virtio-fs drivers manually on the windows vm before starting the service and to do that follow this tutorial : link
bye (:
